Legislative workers to shut down National and State Assemblies on Wednesday. In another turn of events, the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike. This strike, scheduled for Wednesday, October 25, 2023, is based on state governors’ failure to implement financial autonomy for state assemblies.
The workers have not taken this step lightly. They had previously issued a 21-day strike notice, indicating the gravity of the matter. The recent letter, signed by PASAN National President Mohammed Usman, emphasizes the union’s unwavering commitment to pursuing their demands.
The core demand revolves around financial autonomy for state assemblies. The association observed that without this autonomy, the state assemblies cannot function independently and effectively.
Financial autonomy means that state assemblies would have control over their finances, enabling them to carry out their duties without being subject to external interference.

The letters, signed by the acting Secretary General of PASAN, Agugbue Ugochi Happiness, stated that their decision to shut down the legislative arms of government was driven by the failure of the governors to implement the financial autonomy, as provided in the constitution.
Happiness informed journalists on Monday that the injunction was initially issued on September 18, 2023. Unfortunately, the governors chose to ignore this ultimatum until it expired. This led to a further extension of the ultimatum by one week.
It has been reported that legislative workers across the 36 states and the National Assembly in Nigeria have vowed to shut down operations over the failure of state governors to implement financial autonomy for state assemblies in line with the 1999 Constitution.
The workers, under the auspices of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), have concluded all arrangements to lock up their respective workplaces pending when their demands would be granted.
The workers have issued an ultimatum since September 18, 2023, which the governors ignored until it expired.
